Replacement condenser unit set on a new pad at a Henderson home

Straight answer

Repair it or replace it?

Start with the age of the system. That settles most cases on its own.

  1. Under 10 years

    Usually repair

A single failed component on a system this young is almost always worth fixing. Capacitors, contactors, and fan motors are routine parts.

  2. 10 to 15 years

    Do the math

This is the grey zone, and it’s where an honest contractor matters most. Use the $5,000 rule below instead of a gut feeling.

  3. Over 15 years

    Usually replace

Especially if it still runs R-22 refrigerant. Production ended in 2020, so recharging a leaking R-22 system is expensive and buys you a season at best.

The $5,000 rule

Age of the unit × the repair quote

Under $5,000

Repair it. A 6 year old system with a $600 quote comes to $3,600.

Over $5,000

Put the money toward a replacement. A 14 year old system with a $900 quote comes to $12,600.

It's a rule of thumb, not a law. A compressor or evaporator coil failure pushes an older system toward replacement no matter the arithmetic. Those are the two most expensive parts in the box. We'll tell you which situation you're actually in.
